Psychology &
Neuropsychology Services

Dealing with the complex cognitive, emotional and behavioral issues that accompany a stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, neurological disorder or musculoskeletal condition can be daunting. With the expert guidance of Kessler's psychologists and neuropsychologists, clients will work to overcome these challenges and optimize their level of cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning.

We offer a scope of inpatient and outpatient services to help individuals at each stage of their rehabilitation and recovery.

Our Approach

Kessler's skilled psychologists and neuropsychologists carefully tailor treatment to the individuals personal needs and rehabilitation goals. Our comprehensive approach focuses on four key areas:

  • Assessment — Evaluations are performed with assessment tools that meet professionally defined standards of practice. Assessment instruments are sensitive to the needs of patients of various age groups and cultural diversity.
    • Learning and Academic Evaluations
    • Psychodiagnostic Evaluations
    • Neuropsychological Evaluations
    • Dementia/Capacity Evaluations
    • Pre-Surgical Evaluations
  • Psychotherapy — In Kessler's clinical setting, our psychologists will work with a patient and often family members to address psychological, cognitive, behavioral, somatic, and/or social disturbances. Clinical interventions are provided to decrease the frequency, duration and severity of impairment and improve the patient's level of functioning. Frequency and duration of services are determined by the patient's specific care needs. Psychotherapy services include:
    • Individual
    • Family
    • Group
    • Crisis Intervention
  • Cognitive Rehabilitation — Cognition refers to skills and performance of mental processes necessary to learn, understand and respond to information. It includes but is not limited to orientation, attention, learning/memory, organization, processing, problem-solving and executive function.

Through comprehensive Cognitive Rehabilitatio, we provide a range of services and activities designed to address patient's specific cognitive deficits and/or impairment that underlie, exacerbate and/or act as a barrier to recovery, rehabilitation and community re-entry. Compensatory strategies are taught on an individual and group basis to improve the patient's functioning and prepare the patient for educational/vocational pursuits and community re-entry.

  • Education — Our goal is to help prepare patients and their families for maximal independence at home, work and community. Patient and families are provided with education and training to manage sequelae of the patient's injury or disability, including potential effects on psychological state, emotional adjustment and cognition, in order to ensure optimal benefit from treatment during and after formal rehabilitation and facilitate adjustment in the community after discharge.
  • Consultation — In addition to cognitive and psychotherapy services, we also address any specific clinical concerns of the physician, interdisciplinary team member(s), patient or family. Consultation services are provided for diagnostic and/or treatment plan development. Consultation services include but are not limited to mental status monitoring, compensatory strategies related to cognitive impairment, psychopharmacological intervention, and behavior management.
