West Orange, NJ – Physicians and nurses at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, one of the nation's leading medical rehabilitation hospitals, have been recognized for their excellence and expertise in patient care. Jeffrey Cole, MD, Director of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation; Steven Kirshblum, MD, Medical Director and Director of Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation; Todd Linsenmeyer, MD, Director of Urology; and Joseph Valenza, MD, Director of Pain Management and Director of Outpatient Development, were named to the Top Doctors: New York Metro Area guidebook.

Drs. Cole and Kirshblum were also named among the 19 specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation to be included in the annual list of "Best Doctors" published by New York magazine. The listings are based on an independent survey conducted by Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd. Kessler's Chief Clinical Officer Joan Alverzo, PhD, CRRN, and Michele Russell, RN, CRRN, of Kessler's West Orange campus, were among the ten New Jersey nurses presented with the prestigious 2009 Governor's Nursing Merit Award. Dr. Alverzo was honored for her accomplishments in nursing research and Ms. Russell, who works in Kessler's Spinal Cord Injury Center was recognized for her outstanding work in patient care.

This special Merit Awards program, now in its 20th year, acknowledges the important role and significant contribution of nursing professionals to New Jersey's healthcare system. The awards help to recognize the unique blend of dedicated care, clinical excellence and human compassion that nurses provide. "We are very proud of our medical and nursing leaders who have earned such distinguished recognition from their colleagues," said Kessler President Robert Brehm. "It is their commitment to the very best in rehabilitation care, education and research that continues to support the progress of our patients and the mission of our hospital."
